Voltaire Hector

Voltaire Hector was born in Port-au-Prince in 1952. His journey into painting began in 1977, inspired and encouraged by his brother, Roland Hector. Starting with simple landscapes, Hector gradually expanded his subject matter, especially after the passing of his brother, which marked a turning point in his artistic development.

Today, Hector is recognized as one of Haiti’s leading contemporary folk artists. His works are often autobiographical, featuring narratives that accompany his vivid depictions of daily life in Haiti. His paintings cover a wide array of themes, including family life, Vodou ceremonies, spiritual icons, medical scenes, political commentary, and personal aspects of his own love life.

Hector is a dedicated artist, continually refining his technique and enhancing the presentation of his work. His art is featured in prominent Haitian art collections and has even been used by director Jonathan Demme in his films. With his unique voice and evolving artistry, Hector is poised to be among the select Haitian artists whose works will be collected and celebrated for generations to come.
