Micius Stephane

Micius Stéphane was born in 1912 in Bainet, a small village on Haiti’s southern coast, and passed away in 1996. Initially earning his living as a cobbler and sculpting as a hobby on Sundays, Stéphane’s artistic journey took a significant turn in 1946 when he met Dewitt Peters and began his painting career at the Art Center. As a naïve painter, Stéphane is celebrated for his detailed and charming depictions of everyday life in Haiti, capturing the essence of his homeland with remarkable precision.

Recognized as one of Haiti’s most esteemed contemporary artists, Stéphane's work gained international acclaim, with exhibitions from 1961 to 1979 in countries such as Germany, the United States, England, Italy, and France. Notably, one of his exhibitions in Paris was sponsored by André Malraux. His artwork is highly valued by collectors and can be found in prestigious collections, including Musée d’Art Nader and Musée d’Art Haïtien of College Saint Pierre in Haiti, as well as the Detroit Institute of Arts in Michigan. Continuing his artistic legacy, Stéphane's children, Peters Stéphane and Edith Stéphane, have also pursued careers as painters.
